Graduate PROGRAMS Accelerated Program (MSN) Frequently Asked Questions How much of a time commitment does the Accelerated Pathway program require? Can I do this program part time? Do I have to be admitted to the program to start course work? Am I guaranteed entrance to the master's major of my choice? How do I apply for the master's specialty? What if I decide to change my master's specialty? What financial aid opportunities are available to Accelerated Pathway students? How do I get started applying for the program? Accelerated students come from engineering, biology, business, the humanities education, the social sciences, communication and the arts, social work, and from other health care fields. Some students have extensive post college work experience and others are recent graduates. Some have worked in a health related field; others have been home raising their children. Students are male and female; young and old. All have in common the desire to enter the practice of nursing - some because that is really what they have always wanted; others because they want to work with people and have just recently been intrigued by the rich opportunities to contribute to health that nursing offers. How much of a time commitment does the Accelerated Pathway program require? During Phase I students have varying time commitments depending upon the number of prerequisites needed. Time commitment will also vary depending on learning style and the efficiency of study habits. If students have been away from academic study for a period of time we encourage obtaining materials that review strategies for improving study effectiveness. Phase II of the program is intense requiring full time commitment to study as the credit hours and content are heavy. To ensure success in this phase any part time work should be minimal. Can I do this program part time? Depending on the number of prerequisite courses needed, study in Phase I of the program will be full or part time. The program is full time through Phase II of the program. During Phase III master's courses are scheduled so that students can elect to be part time or full time students. Students desiring to gain work experience post licensure may enroll in master's core courses or non clinical course to reduce the number of credit hours needed in subsequent quarters. However, if full time enrollment is desired for loan, scholarship, or financial aid purposes graduate students must enroll in 12 credit hours. To maintain enrollment in this graduate program students must enroll in one course per year. Failure to do so will result in a charge for reinstatement. (See University Graduate Program for information about the cost of reinstatement). Do I have to be admitted to the program to start course work? Admission is not required to enroll in Phase I prerequisite courses. Application and admission is required for enrollment in Phase II courses. All of the Phase I prerequisite courses must be completed before students can start Phase II. If I have not yet been admitted to the Accelerated Pathway program, how do I register for any prerequisite courses that I need? Students may register as a non-matriculated adult continuing education student through the Adult Education Center. We recommend that you consult the College of Nursing Graduate Program Advisor before registering. Am I guaranteed entrance to the master's major of my choice? During the Phase II portion of the program students have the opportunity for learning more about the various master's majors. Students usually apply to one or two that interest them, although one will usually be the first choice. However, some specialties are highly competitive, therefore the College cannot guarantee the specialty in which a student is accepted will be the specialty of first choice. The nurse anesthesia master's specialty program requires evidence of a year of intensive care experience prior to consideration of application to that specialty The neonatal nurse practioner specialty also requires experience. Some prior or concurrent experience in practice is also desirable for other specialty areas. (See Master's specialty area programs for additional information.) How do I apply for the master's specialty? Submit to the Graduate Program Advisor an updated goal statement that includes why you are interested in the master's specialty, an updated resume, and a master's specialty application form obtained from the Graduate Program Advisor. What if I decide to change my master's specialty? The College has a process whereby this can be accomplished. Changing the specialty should be done after consulting with the director of the first specialty and the director for the new master's specialty. Students will have to develop new goal statements before admission to the new specialty. What financial aid opportunities are available to Accelerated Pathway students? Phase I Accelerated students may be eligible for financial aid after being accepted in the Accelerated Pathway program. Information is available through the UC Financial Aid Office. Beginning in Phase II of the program Accelerated Pathway students compete with other graduate students for University Graduate Scholarships (UGS) and graduate assistantships. Selection is based on previous academic performance and rests heavily on GRE scores. Selection of graduate assistants is also dependent on matching the applicant to College need. Application for UGS and graduate assistantships must be received by January 1. Application is required every year of enrollment. Applications for scholarships offered by the College of Nursing can be submitted from May 1 through June 30. Additional information on financial aid is also available on the College website. How do I get started applying for the program? To get started, take a look at the Accelerated Check List.
