This program is available either full-time (6 quarters)
or part-time to qualified applicants. The program integrates physical
and mental health within a cultural competency curriculum to prepare
graduates to deliver quality services to underserved and other primary
care areas.
Psychiatric/Family Nurse Practitioner responsibilities
include monitoring chronic diseases, ordering and interpreting diagnostic
studies, prescribing medications and other treatments, providing health
maintenance care across the life span, promoting positive health behaviors
through education and counseling, and collaborating with physicians
and other health professionals as needed. Courses in the major and
the clinical experiences are consistent with national specialty certification
requirements. Practica are with a variety of nurse practitioners and
physicians from all specialty areas. Graduates are eligible to take
either of the national certification exams for Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
and Family Nurse Practitioner.
