College of Nursing Faculty Devon M. Berry, PhD, RNC Assistant Professor, Psychiatric Nursing College of Nursing University of Cincinnati EDUCATION 1995, BSN, Nursing, Cedarville University BACKGROUND Following completion of his undergraduate work, Devon Berry entered directly into a MSN program and began his career in academia. The subsequent years have involved a mix of practice in psychiatric mental health settings, consulting for nursing research domestically and abroad, and teaching mental health and research in both classroom and clinical settings. TEACHING Professor Berry has taught courses in psychiatric mental health care and research. He has specialized in understanding and communicating the spiritual aspect of care involved in mental health. He has been noted by students for his engaging teaching style in classroom and clinical settings and for enhancing the classroom experience through the use of technology. SERVICE Professor Berry serves the nursing community through the facilitating of nursing research in community hospitals and staff education for inpatient psychiatric mental health staff. He serves his local community as an elder in his church and counseling with youth and adults. PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Sigma Theta Tau RESEARCH Professor Berry is involved in research designed to increase understanding of the relationships between religiosity, spirituality, and mental health. His interests lie in several specific areas: (1) Developing theoretically and methodologically sound approaches to studying religiosity in the health care sciences; (2) Theory-testing as means to understanding mechanisms by which religiosity and spirituality effect health conditions; and (3) Designing and employing prevention-intervention models that are holistic and theory-based. His dissertation research examined the effect of religiosity on a diathesis-stress theory of depression in young adults across time. In addition to his work with religiosity and mental health, Professor Berry and researchers from the University of Washington and University of Montreal are involved in research investigating the determinants of major health outcomes across countries. This research utilizes secondary data analysis to examine the role of approximately 70 population level variables in determining infant mortality, child mortality, and health-adjusted life year (HALY, HALE). It is the goal of this research to aid governments and non-governmental relief and development organizations in data-based decision making to improve population health status.
