BACKGROUND

Dr. Whitmer is doctorally prepared as a physiologist but began her nursing education as a diploma graduate and subsequently as a baccalaureate graduate nurse. Her clinical experience consists of medical-surgical nursing with more recent specialization in oncology nursing. Clinical experience provides a strong foundation for her current program of research. Dr. Whitmer's research experience consists of basic physiological and pharmacological research. More recent endeavors have been to apply the rigors of basic research, to the applied science of nursing.

RESEARCH

Currently, Dr. Whitmer's research program addresses symptom management with a focus on the management of cancer treatment related skin toxicities. The long-term goal of this program of research is to establish nursing interventions for symptom management. In doing so, research outcomes will provide the foundation for evidence based practice. A current research project examines the symptom which includes skin toxicities following biotherapy. While each individual experiences symptom uniquely, it is recognized that symptoms are affected by and effect the presentation of other symptoms. Addressing symptoms as an interacting cluster is at the cutting edge of science. Dr. Whitmer organized a State of the Art Symposium on Symptoms as Clusters (2002). The Oncology Nursing Foundation supports the study "Management of Skin Toxicities following Biotherapy".

In addition to her research work, Dr. Whitmer has been appointed as the Contact Person for the Fatigue Focus Group of the national Oncology Nursing Society. This focus group is a network of practicing clinical oncology nurses throughout the country. Information and resources are shared. Dr. Whitmer is a reviewer for both research proposals and articles.

As Associate Director of the Institute for Nursing Research, Dr. Whitmer has many opportunities to facilitate the research activities of the nursing staff at The University Hospital. While these studies are varied, they all address nursing care and/or the delivery of health care. An example includes a proposal to fund the expansion of Diabetic Self Management Education (DSME) to include physical activity in order to address diabetes and obesity of Cincinnati's disadvantaged population.

Dr. Whitmer is a member of the American Physiological Society and the Oncology Nursing Society.

TEACHING

Dr. Whitmer's teaching responsibilities include graduate level courses in physiology, pharmacology, research and independent study. She is involved in distributive learning using online technologies to deliver course content. Dr. Whitmer has formed a team to develop an assessment tool to identify students at risk for successful completion of advanced physiology study.
